the brief introduction of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

Pyrolytic carbon

Pyrolytic carbon is a material similar to graphite, but with some covalent bonding between its graphene sheets as a result of imperfections in its production. Pyrolytic carbon is man-made and is not thought to be found in nature. Generally it is produced by heating a hydrocarbon nearly to its decomposition temperature, and permitting the graphite to crystalize ().

Properties of isotropic pyrolytic carbon

As mentioned above, the structure of pyrolytic carbon is essentially isotropic and so are its properties. These are summarized in Table 7.3. Hardness: Being composed of minute crystallites with essentially random orientation, isotropic pyrolytic carbon lacks the easy interlayer slippage which is characteristic of the well-oriented laminar or columnar structures of pyrolytic graphite. As a

Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite by XPS: Surface

1998/6/4X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to characterize a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) sample. The HOPG was cleaved using scotch tape prior to introduction into an ultrahigh vacuum analytical chamber. No further cleaning was used as no elements other than carbon were detected in XPS survey scans. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) spectra obtained by

Nanomaterials

We discuss the electrodeposition of two-dimensional (2D) Pt-nanostructures on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) achieved under constant applied potential versus a Pt counter electrode (Eappl = ca. minus;2.2 V vs. NHE, normal hydrogen electrode). The deposition conditions are discussed in terms of the electrochemical behavior of the electrodeposition precursor (H2PtCl6). We performed

Proton

2014/5/1In summary, we have studied the effects of proton irradiation on the charge transport in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The resistivity and the magnetoresistance were shown to be dictated by the carrier mobility, which is attributed to the defects created by the proton irradiation as revealed by the Raman spectroscopy.

Characterization and Oxidation of Fe Nanoparticles

2009/3/30We have studied the 2p and 3p XPS core levels of Fe NPs evaporated onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) under ultrahigh vacuum. Both components of the 2p spectrum of Fe 0 are found to be highly asymmetric to higher binding energy; each is composed of a major photoemission peak, plus several smaller peaks attributable to a vacancy cascade, a process known to occur in Fe.

Josephson

2013/2/15The existence of superconductivity in graphite-based compounds goes back to 1965 when it was first observed in potassium intercalated graphite C 8 K [].Since then a considerable number of studies have reported this phenomenon, reaching critical temperatures T c ~ 10 K in intercalated graphite [2, 3], above 30 K—although not percolative—in some highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

Raman spectroscopy of graphite

Highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) is artificially grown graphite with an almost perfect alignment perpendicular to the carbon planes. Along the in-plane directions, however, the crystallites are again small and randomly oriented. The disorder in a graphite

Indications of superconductivity in doped highly oriented

2011/9/1Highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) can be used in this experimental study since interlayer coupling in it is weak [3, 4] and it approximates graphene fairly well. Since HOPG is robust and easily handled, we decided to perform our initial investigation using it as a starting material.
